ARC awards $80,000 grant to Dunwoody
Reprint from AJC - The Atlanta Regional commission (ARC) has given Dunwoody an $80,000 grant to help revitalize Dunwoody Village, the historic center of the community.  The city will use the grant for a study on ways to transform Dunwoody Village into a town center with a mix of uses and improved traffic.  The city may consider developing new parks and green space along with a City Hall and other government buildings, the ARC said.  The city now rents space in an office park for its City Hall.  The grant comes from the Livable Cities Initiative program, created in 1999 to help local governments reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality. more »

Ashford Dunwoody Rd - Mt Vernon Road Improvement
CRIER - The intersection improvement at Mt. Vernon and Ashford Dunwoody Roads is a project managed and funded by the Perimeter Community Improvement Districts (PCID).  The project includes a redesign of pedestrian crossings, ADA-compliant ramps, enhanced pedestrian signage, updated intersection markings, improved signal timing, illuminated street signage, video detection, traffic signal poles and mast arm.  In addition, the intersection is being realigned in a manner in which the continual right turn movement will allow for a "pocket park" feature at the southeast corner of the intersection accessible to pedestrians.  The landscaping of the park, the rewiring of the new traffic lights, the removal of the old traffic signal poles and all other work should be completed in the next couple of months.  If you have any additional questions or comments, you can contact the PCID's Program Director Tony Peters at tpeters@perimetercid.org or 770-889-7074. more »

Notes from the Bellewood ARC

What’s going on at the t-intersection as you come into Bellewood?

A new and smaller STOP sign will soon replace the current one in the Harreld's yard, and a finial will sit atop the sign pole.

Temporary directional signs have been placed in front of the cable utility box in the Dreisbach side yard, visible straight ahead as you stop.  Recently, an ambulance driver told Ted Szabo that directional signage at the main intersection in BW would save precious response time. To that end, the ARC asked Randy (Maintenance) to put up signs indicating which way to turn to find certain house numbers.

The permanent replacement signage will be both effective and aesthetically pleasing.  A sign we see multiple, multiple times each week should be attractive, so the ARC will ask Stephen Fuller and/or Alec Michaelides, original BW architect and landscape architect to approve or make design suggestions.

In January, the ARC sent a reminder to all homeowners to please check paint and wood for repair and rotting on their homes and fences .  Here it is August and many homes have a fresh coat of paint on repaired trim, perhaps even a pressure-washing.  The effort for repairing and repainting fences continues. Thank you for efforts at renewing and keeping what we’ve come to call the “look and feel" of Bellewood.

Thank you to Randy for his work, to the Dreisbachs for the use of their yard, and to the Harrelds for having the STOP sign in theirs.

Tags on Trees

Perhaps some of you have noticed that there is a small metal tag attached to the Willow Oaks and the Chinese Elms throughout the neighborhood.  PLEASE do not remove these tags.  ArborGuard has placed these identification tags on our signature trees as part of the comprehensive report they are preparing for us.

According to Kevin Carnes, our arborist, the tags will correspond to specific trees in the inventory report.  They will be useful down the road, when referencing specific trees on the property, and help with communication both on our end, as well as Bellewood’s end.   Ex.    Bellewood:  “Kevin, we are concerned about the Willow Oak No. 14”.   I can not only use that to help locate the precise tree in question when I inspect the property, but can reference back to the original inventory to check for changes in condition, notes, etc.  The tags will not hurt the trees.

Kevin also adds - All the field measurements have been collected.  A portion of the resulting report will depend on environmental data from the U.S. Forest Service.  We have submitted the info to them and expect it returned within 6-8 weeks.  We will finalize the report within days of the return, and provide copies to all the residents.

If You Want the Dunwoody Post Office to Stay Open

Message from Dunwoody Homeowner's Assoc - The US Postal Service has announced plans to close the Dunwoody Post Office in the heart of Dunwoody.  Should that occur, it would move the post office from its central location to the fringe of the city.  If you want the post office to remain in Dunwoody Village, the DHA is asking that you become an activist and write or fax (no e-mails) your congressional representatives, the Governor, and the Postmaster General of the United States.   State clearly your objection to the Dunwoody Village Post office closing and request that service levels be reinstated and upgraded.  The DHA will take a similar position with the same officials.  The address for the Postmaster General is:  Jack Potter, 475 L'Enfant Plaza SW, Washington, DC 20260-0010. The address for the Governor is:  Gov. Sonny Perdue, 203 State Capitol, Atlanta, GA 30334 and the address for Congressman Tom Price is 424 Cannon House Office Building, Washington, DC 20515.

Treatment For Bellewood Trees

While pruning our trees last week, our arborist noticed that many of the oak trees have scale on their limbs.  These insects live under a tiny "shell" like a turtle and suck the sap from the tree. This will weaken the tree and can, at the least, cause growth loss.  The HOA has asked Arborguard to apply both a systemic and a spray treatment to help control the outbreak.

In addition, the Chinese Elms in the parks have been dropping their leaves due to a fungal infection brought on by the unusually wet weather.  The fungus causes the leaves to drop prematurely.  Arborguard will be spraying the elms with a fungicide. Both treatments will be done in June.
